What is a Deacon?
Deacons are role models for Christ-like compassionate care. Deacons are ordained by the church to embody Christ’s love, by demonstrating leadership in serving people in need, both within and beyond the community of faith. The word “deacon” comes from the Greek word “diakonos” and means “one who serves." It is the same word used by Jesus when he spoke of himself: For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45)
Deacons serve on a team led by a Deacon Coordinator at each of MPPC’s campuses: Menlo Park (950 Santa Cruz and The Café), Open Door Church San Mateo, and Open Door Church Mountain View. Their commitment is to serve one or two 3-year terms. We seek deacon nominations once per year for those church members whom others observe as gifted and called to care for others.
Do you need Deacon support? DEACON CARE REQUEST
Our Deacons provide prayer support and short-term help for those in our congregation not currently in a small group, or for those in a small group whose needs go beyond the capability of the small group to provide. We would love to help you!
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me . . . Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me. (Matthew 25:35-36, 40)
